Many of us have heard about the negative effects of single-use plastics on the environment, specifically how it effects the oceans and marine life. Much of the single-use plastics (bags, bottles, straws) used today end up in our oceans, causing massive amounts of pollution to the ocean and in turn, harming and killing marine life who unintentionally consume plastic.
One of the larger contributors to this problem are plastic straws. It’s estimated that we use over 500 million plastic straws every day in America alone; that’s enough to circle the earth 2 and half times. Most of these plastic straws end up in the ocean and are among the top items found during beach clean-ups.
So, what can we do in the workplace to reduce the use of plastic straws and combat this problem? Lucky for us, there are many alternatives apart from not using straws at all.
One great alternative to plastic straws is switching to paper straws. Rhyme now offers two styles of paper straws (individually wrapped and unwrapped), both of which are composed of food safety paper and are BPA free. It is an easy switch to make, as they are affordable and offer all the same convenience of plastic straws, without the harmful effects to our environment.
Many companies and cities have already taken action and banned plastic straws, so make the switch now to reduce your company’s consumption of single-use plastics.
